Either the Mongol Invasions of Japan(which is where the word Kamikazee came from) or the the causes and results of the Isolation from the outside world.

A pivotal event in Japanese history is the arrival of the U.S. Navy ships in the 1850's and the so called "opening" of Japan. Japan had for many years almost entirely cut themselves off from the rest of th world. This included execution of sailors from other countries who were washed up on their shores. Commodore Perry sailed into Japanese port south of Edo (Tokyo) and negotiated a treaty opening Japan to outsiders. (gaijin)

You could do a history of the game Go and how it affected rulers and people of all ages during times of peace, war and now.

(Go is a game of stregety where one person is black and one person is white and they try to take territory and prisonersr. It's actually a very complex game and has done a lot for their culture).

You could also do the samurai era and their significance.
