Math was important to ancient greek society because they were the great builders and sculptors of that time. Everything they did was centered around math for a reason. They measured your body by your head (i.e. I'd be seven and a half heads tall) and the also found that the span of your arms is equal to the height of your body.

When building, they were able to use math to determine how many beams they would need, how to slope the atrium in the correct way so that rain would fall into the pool and no where else. They were able to create two or three story buildings and created works like the Pantheon and the Temple of Zeus.

Math was so important to them because their culture thrived upon building and sculpting and they could not do such things without math.
