Depends what you mean. If you mean to get actual mp3 files onto your computer, your legal venues are to search online for artists who hand out their music for free (there are some).
Or you can download podcasts, which are perfectly legal.

If you mean that you don't like iTunes and want to use different software to manage your collection, I'm pretty sure it's not possible on a PC or a mac, but on linux you can try rhythmbox (even if it's not perfect)

first of all you need itunes to put the music on your ipod second of all itunes offer free songs and videos third of all someone is going to answer with limewire and bearshare and some other site if you do not want to end up in jail and with all your electronic devices (this include TVs) then don't use them just use your friends' Cd's
