Morphy was probably further ahead of his contemporaries than any player in history (unless we go back to the 1700s and Philidor).
Because chess masters build on the knowledge acquired by earlier masters, there is a good argument that Garry Kasparov is very possibly the strongest player in history (I know he's no longer the world champ, but at his peak, he was stronger than anyone playing today).
There have been a number of players who were more or less universally considered the best of all time, up to their time...chronologically, those players would be Morphy, Lasker, Capablanca, Fischer and Kasparov.
Kasparov would probably be the strongest of these players, at least on paper... but chess involves a bit of psychology as well... and no one really knows how any of these players would do against each other if they were actually sitting across from each other at the board, in their prime.
My money would probably be on Kasparov in such a tournament, but you probably couldn't go wrong with Fischer or Capa either. Lasker won what was probably the strongest tournament ever, the St. Petersburg tournament of 1914.
Just about everything I read on the subject these days suggests that Kasparov is considered by most chess experts to be the strongest player in history, to this point. But again, it's because he's been able to build upon the accumulated chess knowledge of all the other all-time greats who came before him.
