I've always thought of Hawk-eye from The Last of the Mohicans and The Deerslayer as a hero.
And don't neglect those anti-heroes from the British Romantic Era. Byron and Percy Shelley really typified this.

The only one that immediately jumps to mind other than Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights is Ed Kennedy from I Am The Messenger, an amazing novel by Markus Zusak. He isn't attractive, but he is kind, selfless, helps people, and gets the girl.
