I don't think it's only "Black" people who make up "unique" names for their children. I think you are putting a label on someones heritage. Just because they are black doesn't mean their child's name is going to be Shaniqua or something, and just because someone is white doesn't mean their child is going to be John or Steven. I think black people name their children unique names a lot because it reminds them of the African heritage they have. Just the way my husband and I gave our children Italian names because of his Italian heritage. Names no matter how "weird" are special and I don't think you should judge someone just because they want to make up a name for their child. At least the kid won't have to go by his last initial when he gets in school because there are more than one kid with the same name.(Jacob R., Jacob T., etc)

I'm sure there are multiple reasons. First of all, if you lived in a country that brought you there as a slave, would you want to used their names? It seems only natural that black people would reject some European cultural traditions, which include names. Maybe some of those names are picked just in case their kids become famous. Like "Fantasia,"--she didn't even have to pick a screen name because her momma already gave her one!

Sorry, yet Sebastian is grotesque. each time I pay attention that call i think of of seafood which makes me think of of the Little Mermaid which makes me think of of the crab and that's maximum on no account amazing. Leah, is okay even though that's uninteresting and Ivy is on the threshold of poison. Anthony is excellent. understand a mixture boy with that call.

I have no idea. Bill Cosby even said something about blacks naming their children names like that. People are free to choose whatever names they want for their children. I always thought the names wer perhaps ethnic names, but I'm not sure.

Listen up Blunt Force. People can name their children what they see fit. Why does a person stop to contemplate something so irrelevant to any of the world's issues? I don't understand. Why must some people always find faults in us who are born with brown skin? Leave us alone! Give us a break! Seriously.

All names are made up, hon. Some just aren't European as you and many others would like them to be. Would you like it better if everyone's name was John or Jane?
Names like Laquisha and Tyreah are cultural names, and they have meaning just as names like Mary Beth or Josephine have. But of course you haven't bothered to research this.
I got a Hebrew name from the bible because I have a family of devout Catholics. I love my name, but I wouldn't feel like any less of a person if my name was Lakeisha or something. I'd still be the same person.

Those names are not "made up.' Many African-Americans choose names that reflect THEIR culture and history--just like many whites do. Its not "wierd." Perhaps you should try learning that there is a whole world out their that doesn't follow your particular customs--no is there any reason why they should.

Because they can name them whatever name they choose, and they probably don't consider the names weird.

I don't know, but I don't want to name my children any normal names. Why should they be like everybody else? They are unique.
