Smyth is a great player and loyal one, so yes he should be Captain. He's been with the team since 94-95, his whole career. Who could ask for more than that?

No, I think he should be captain of the Detroit Red Wings. :-P
He's a good leader, and their best player. I am not too sure why he ISN'T the captain, honestly, but it may just be that the coach doesn't want him distracted from the rest of his duties on the ice. Sometimes the best player isn't the best choice for captain. Take the New York Rangers, for example. No one in that locker room questions that Brendan Shanahan is THE leader of that team right now, but no one questions Jagr having the C, either. It is part of the team chemistry. I suspect the same is true for Smyth in Edmonton.

captain or assistant pretty much mean the same you can question the ref about calls (to a point) in the dressing room its all about respect and leadership the C and A's are the ones who have to tell the other players that they are not living up to whats expected of them before the coaches step in and bench or sit them they must also try to keep up the morale of those who are not playing captains often lead by example should Smith be captain sure why not doe's he have to be no he'll give the same effort every game no matter what C is just a letter respect for his ability is what really counts
