I believe you need a degree in art media or similar.

I can draw very well, but I have no qualifications either. So nobody wants to hire someone based purely on alleged talent.

That's where the degree comes in.

I doubt very much a newspaper is going to demand a comic artist to have a degree at all. All you need is talent and some markers (they reproduce better than pencils!)

"Graphics" isn't just computer work, it's learning the elements of design. I learned it all before there were computers... but it seems that's all changed now. Meanwhile, you could likely benefit from some fine art training, even if you just took a couple of courses like design or colour theory.

There's no reason you can't do comics 100% by hand, either - some of the best Japanese Manga artists don't use any computer at all, just markers. Some just use the computer to fill in repetitive backgrounds, and as you said, to scan the final images for publication.

Best of luck to you

I've been a successful illustrator for the past 15 years and I'm completely self-taught. No college, no classes.

If you're talented enough you'll get work no matter what your credentials. Put a portfolio together or start an art blog. Promote yourself!

The linework in most comics is still hand drawn, but the colouring is pretty much all computer these days- mainly Photoshop. Very easy to teach yourself or make use of the hundreds of free tutorials on the internet.

You should try and meet someone who is in the business and ask if you could be his apprentice and help him out. Then you could learn exactly what you need to do to get your art out there. I really don't think you would need a college degree, but experience. Best of luck-
