Yahoo real estate has a neighborhood profile section. It gives you the crime index, average household income, percent college graduates, etc. Another idea is to look online for certain chain stores that you are familiar with. For example, Whole Foods stores or gourmet food shops tend to be in safe yuppie neighborhoods. Also Borders books don't open in high crime areas. Corporations already did their research before opening a store in a certain neighborhood.

You can get crime statistics by police precinct (area) but the source of these varies. Maybe try the chamber of commerce?
Also, try www.census.gov. The census has a ton of statistics by geographical areas...one that may help is income/education by county or zip code. It may take a while to find what you're looking for but worth it.

You can't go by the web sites. They all look good. The best way is to visit a place for a short time and talk to the residents.
