As I've suggested in another answer, your Roborovski is never going to be a "holding" hamster. They are the only species of the five commonly kept as pets at are like this. They are not fond of being held and while they rarely bite, they will try their hardest to get out of your hands. It is just their nature. They are not territorial (with humans) as suggested in the other answers. Campbell Russian Dwarves are the species that is known for being territorial.

On the flip side, Roborovskis are very curious. Just lay your hand in the cage and the robs will come over to investigate. They may climb onto your hand and up your arm. Make a movement though and they'll take off running. Their behavior is very flighty and there's isn't much you can do to change thousands of years worth of instinct.

You need to decide if you can love Twinkie for the hamster that he is. If you are always going to wish you could hold him on your lap while you watch TV, then consider getting a second hamster of a different species (in a different cage of course). Then you can enjoy the company of Twinkie and hold the other one when you want to cuddle. I'm sorry the pet store didn't educate you on their behavior. Most people don't know about Roborovskis and their nature and you're not the first owner to be disappointed by their behavior.

Using a small hamster ball is great, just be sure to put the ball in the cage and put him in it. Never hold a Roborovski unless its cage or another "container" is underneath of it. Roborovskis are very small and very fast and they can get away from the most experience hamster breeder.

Here is an article by Linda Price, one of the top breeders in the country, about Roborovskis:

Dwarf hamsters (all kinds) are a lot more aggressive and harder to train. This does not mean you cannot train them to be handled though. Handle them daily, several times a day to get them used to it. If you like your robo hammy, keep him. He can still go in a ball on the floor. And like you said it was fate, just put lots of time into him, and you will have a great pet.

Teddy Bear hamsters are the friendliest easiest to handle.

For information sake, Hamsters actually do not like to be handled around every now or so frequently. What your rent told you is actually trying to minimize the stress on the hamster.

Some can be handled just give him lots of attention so he can get used to you. Even though alot of people don't think so Rats make great pets. You can handle them alot just watch for their claws. I don't even have to put a lid on my rat's cage and they never leave it.
