Since I assume you're talking about Nightcrawler from the X-Men, "BAMF" is nothing more than a sound effect spelled out in text, i.e. - BOOM!, ZAP!, POW!, etc. (like in the 1960s Batman TV show). The official word for this is "onomatopoeia." Like the other poster said, they did that a lot in older comics, but not so much now.

Sugarnspyce had it right, but she forgot to mention that the sound actually comes from the Nightcrawler-shaped ‘bubble’ of air collapsing, after he teleports. Or for that matter (I suppose) from him pushing the air out of the way when he appears, since if he just teleported into a mass of air, he would develop air embolisms in his bloodstream and die painfully. They could have used POP, but I suppose that BAMF (as it was written) was the visually more appealing sound effect.

Nothing but older comic readers need a sound for every action like wolverines snick when he pops his claws. In todays comics it rarely happens where a sound effect is required.
