I just got a basic set of prismacolor pencils, but I am disappointed with the way it looks on paper. A lot of the with shows through no matter what. Is there a paper with a smaller tooth I can use or is this just going to happen all the time?

Please don't answer if you are stupid.

If you want a paper with less tooth (smoother) then try paper with a "Plate" surface. 100% Cotton is my favourite.

My absolute favorite drawing base for these pencils has to be smooth matboard - when you are sure of your abilities with these pencils, use Canson smooth finish illustration board. Your problem is in that Prismacolors are wax based, and wax hates grit - I have used these for years, and found most papers start to show "bloom" if you layer alot. "Bloom" is a white haze you get after the wax is piled too high, or in more common cases, where the paper soaks it in too deep and it bleeds outward as a result. I can show you what the illustration/matboard effect looks like - I am still amateur, as I haven't made much $$ yet - but if experience makes the artist, I should be pro by now..lol! Check these links, I use the pencils all the time so you should get an idea of effects...

Canson mi-tientes paper (http://www.dickblick.com/zz107/10/) and Prismacolor pencils go very nicely together. It has two types of surfaces, one smooth and one with more tooth to it. If you're doing a black and white pencil drawing, you can pick a mid-tone paper like a tan or gray and it looks very nice. The paper also works well with many colors. In my experience, its best to use cross-hatching strokes with the colored pencils.
