I always use a whittling knife to cut the wood off then sharpen the graphite on a little piece of fine sandpaper-- pencils last much longer

Walmart has a great little sharpener that runs on 2 AA batteries and is very light and portable. Gives art pencils a nice point.

use a regular sharpner but if you are very serious you might want to buy a pencil pointer as well. it tweeks the lead in the pencil . -- I have NO clue how much they are.
