No President was completely respected while in office. They are respected for what they achieved many years later.

Whew! We'd have to go back a ways for that answer. I see a lost of opinions here but, as I recall the key word is respect.Commonly noted as the top are, Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt consistently. Usually after those three are Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt.
It would be impossible not to include President John F. Kennedy or Ronald Reagan but, probably, histort reflects that there was no more respected President of the United States than Franklin D. Roosevelt # 32 from 1933 - 1945.
Since then there have been 11.

I've a great amount of respect for the present one. I didn't care for Reagan at first but he kinda grew on me. Sorry but I just can't even drag up a warm fuzzy feeling for Carter or Clinton. I liked Ike and Kennedy. Didn't like Nixon, wasn't hot or cold towards Ford. I think Johnson got a bad rap from the press just like Bush is getting. If I've forgotten someone then they must not have impressed me much one way or the other.

That's a tough question. even President Kennedy had his detractors, but it was kept pretty much out of the press. President Eisenour was called a do nothing President. People loved or hated President Franklin D. Rooselvelt. I can't recall any Predident that was really respected to the point that you really didn't hear some nasty remarks.

The last president who I respected was Bill Clinton. I didn't respect his sex-capades, but I think he did a great job as president.

I can only think of three who come close to "respected", George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt. All were very much disliked by certain groups but I think Americans have always been smart enough to recognize what they were doing was RIGHT for America, each in their own contributions.

Actually respected? I think that there were people who respected Clinton a lot. However, Reagan was respected and many people liked him. I think that even the senior Bush had respect. Especially after seeing his kid in action. Jerry Ford was highly respected. Nixon-no, Carter-slightly, Johnson-no, Kennedy-yes, but disliked by some. Ike-yes, FDR-yes, Truman-slightly.
