You can actually run a long peice of air line tubing down the intake line of most canister filters and literally suck out the major air pockets while the end of the intake is in the tank thus priming it fairly easily on the first shot.

Good question. Before shutting it off, both the intake and exhaust need be under water(tank water high enough). Also again before turning it on, or reingaging the quick disconnects. Sounds obvious its during filter maintenece, so I always refill the canister with tank water before putting the lid back on. I only use Fluval types, but havent had to reprime it since I've learned to do it this way.

you cant really but..as long as the level of your tank is high enough it should immediately prime itself. as long as the filter has enough water in it..you shouldnt have a problem. if you lose your prime and cant get it back simply open fliter and add water
