My BF & I are going to the central coast the 2nd week of March for what will be the first trip to Paso, Napa, SLO for both of us. We've got the hotel situation pretty much under control, but I'm wondering what I might need to know about must-see vineyards, restaurants, attractions, etc. And do we need to RSVP to any of the wineries? What is the average price per tour/tasting? What's the average time spent at each vineyard (in order to figure roughly how many places we can see in one day)? We will be driving from LV, into Paso, making our way up to SF within a week's time and would like to get the most out of this trip as possible, so any suggestions are much appreciated!

In Napa, my favorite wineries are Hess, Robert Mondavi, Rutherford, Silver Oak (a little pricey, but cool), Beringer and definitely Sterling (you have to take a tram ride to get up to the top).

If you can go to the Oakville Grocery (which looks like a hole in the wall), be sure to snack your way through it. Also try to eat at Mustard's and have the Grilled Hanger Steak. Go early, like at 5p and the line won't be so long.

Realistically, you can hit maybe 4 a day.....

I hope you enjoy your trip to the beautiful small town where I live. There are close to 100 vineyards here, so you will want to be selective. I recommend Justin Vineyards, Wild Horse Winery, Tobin James Cellars, and such.
If you will be here for the Zinfandel Festival in mid-March, you will find a lot of activity in the park in the center of Paso, across from the Paso Robles Inn.

Here's one good tip...
after visiting your first Winery, make sure you are not the driver.
Wine contains alcohol (duh!) and, especially if it's pretty warm outside, you'll start feeling the effects after a couple of glasses (or comparable amount of "tastes".)
The local Gendarmes are very wise to this.
Have you seen the movie "Sideways"?
Have a fun, safe trip!
