Using a "grid"(square by square) or freehand? I've never used a grid, it takes longer drawing each box, even reading instuctions, I still don't understand an easy or faster way, maybe I'm not measuring things right, (I'm trying to draw these drawings of animals that look like a child drew and make my drawing 100%/identical with the other, -this is a course that is done at home, then I send it in.) It's fustrating.

I prefer freehand myself, that's how I've been drawing all my life.

When I draw on paper, I never use grids. Grids are useful for some kind of illustrations, but for imaginative images, they are not a must.

When using the computer, I normally use the Painter software along with a graphic tablet. It's quite close to real-life drawing and you have lots of advantages with it.

I have used both methods and I personally prefer freehand. I find that there is much more character in the drawing than with the grid. I feel sort of cramped with the grid and tend to get more tense when I draw, which in the end, my drawing loses some of my style.

I'm with you I prefer freehand but tried the grid thing for a painting I started. Good luck anyways.

Freehand, because the grid would just get in my way.......but I prefer painting over drawing.

I find grids stifle artistic expression. It doesn't matter that you're copying something, you still need to make your lines flow smoothly, and that can't be done using a grid.

Just cheat like Kate (the answerer above) - that's how I trace my own drawings.

I have taken that test before, but i cheated. I took a lead pencil and heavily accented the outline of the original, then laid a plain sheet of paper over it and scribbled over it , making sure to keep the paper in the same place. Then I turned it over, and I had a mirror image of the original! then i did the same procedure again, this time darkening the mirror image and laying that on top of the test paper.
Hope you don't mind if I cheated, but it was so frustrating!!!
