Dreams/nightmares can be quite scary as i have found out on many occasions. But what your mum must remember is that it was only a dream and that nothing can really hurt her. The fact that her arms were in agony was probably psychological made worse by the fact that the dream seemed so real. I have found through my own experiences that some dreams are triggered by noises, visual stimulation (before sleep) or other subconscious thoughts.

The best thing that you mum can do is dis-stress herself before she goes to bed, taking a bath for example, don't eat anything, watch TV, especially anything violent and my favourite a nice hot cup of coco. (no hot drinks that contain caffeine)

I am by no means an expert but i have found that some of these things have helped me when i can't get to sleep.

The bigger concern is the pain in her arms upon awaking. She could have been feeling that and constructed a dream around the real physical discomfort.
Please have her see a doctor to check for things like blood clots or arthritis.
A shadow holding her down might be anxiety about a variety of things. She would have to figure out what is bothering her.
It is so nice of you to try to find some way to help your Mom. Good for you.
You can open your eyes but not be completely awake and still in sleep paralysis. I have had that happen. Also, I find that if motivated by fear I can scream out loud, usually after trying to a couple of times. That wakes you up really quickly. So, she could've tried to call out but didn't try again, until she could.

Baby so sorry for your loss. Miscarriage is a horrible experience but your dream seems pleasant - if you felt good walking that baby and feeding her, thats great, hope your sister in law's baby is born safe and well and you keep talking out your feelings about your experience. The dream is obviously a mixture of the two circumstances being replayed in your mind to help you process your feelings about them-or it may be prophetic - either you will get pregnant soon or your sister in law is having a girl

o.k first of all, humans have a lot of dreams in one night, but they only remember the last dream. haven't you ever think that if we sllep for 8 hours shouldn't you remember the whole story of the dream, not just the last 2 minutes of it. and well dreams don't mean anything unless you believe it do, i had so many scary dreams, where my grandmother was there my family and bad things were happening, tell her to relax and not to worry because nothing will happen.

Perhaps she has Sleep Apnea. I did a report on sleeping disorders in high school, and often people with Sleep Apnea have dreams of monster, etc., sitting on their chests, holding them down and making it hard to breathe.

If it continues, I suggest she sees a doctor.

that is a different thing which is known as a night terror. it dosent really mean anything it is just a messed up bit of your subconcious brain. when u are dreaming you are supposed to be paralysed but sometimes your brain wakes up at the wrong time and you are concious but cant move and your mind thinks u are still asleep. thats all it is. its not dangerous.
