I bred them for a few years.
I had three females and one male.
They lived in aquariums with shavings for bedding. They had logs to crwal under to sleep in the day time and food and water dishes.
They eat lots of things but mine did not like meal worms or crickets they prefered cat food.
We used to let ours out to run about the house and they are not messy. The poop is small and easy to clean up not much different than hamsters.
They do puff up their quills and hiss when they are mad. They can bite but they seem not to be able to break the skin so it is like a pinch with teeth. Not bad. They do this thing where they lick themselves and get all foamy at the mouth. It is just something they do and perfectly normal.
They are a fun pet. Here in the midwest they run about $100

I used to have a hedgehog...Named her babe after the pig in the city...They are nocturnal animals so they like sleeping under a blanket or something in the day. They will puff there quills if they get scared and that can hurt. But once they get used to you, they are a lot of fun.I feed mine cat food. They do not bite. They are not mean. You keep them in a cage like for a bunny or ferret. They like to have shavings in it and places to cover up...They are pretty expensive here now...but i wish i had another one.

I have worked for a wildlife rehab facility in UK and although hedgehogs are very appealing, I don't think they make great pets. The one thing that we always had a problem with was that they can get poop (very messy stuff too) pretty much everywhere. The most common place was always on the roof of their crates!!!!

around here they are about $80. ours were never high maintainance. mine even went out with me when i left the house some days. they are good pets once you get used to getting poked with the quills. watch your floor for stray quills otherwise you'll step on them and it tends to leave a burning feeling when you do.
