Probably not. These days, all you really need to do is come up with a demo, and post it on myspace or any other website. Lots of artists are discovered this way.

Yes, I would try out. I am planning to try out for next season's show when they come to a city near where I live. I sing quite well and write some of my own material. Country music mostly, so Nashville Star is also an option I am considering.
I feel that some people do not like the show because the judges
are very critical and tend to even criticise a performer as a person, not just for their singing ability or lack of it.
As a performing artist though, I recognise that as necessary feedback and shall react accordingly.

I definitely would try out if I had a good voice! I just had this conversation with one of my friends the other day, and I feel like if you have a good voice, you have nothing to lose. It's an afternoon out of your life, where you sing with your amazing voice that you sing with in the shower, or to your friends anyway, and if they like you, great! You get a snippit of what it would be like in this industry and lifestyle, and get some legitimate professional feedback on yourself. The worst that could happen is that they don't like your voice, or you don't get to stay in Hollywood for very long...well, you're already not in Hollywood, so why not give it a try? People with a gift should at least give themselves a chance, and I feel like the best part of this show is that the majority of people that make it to the end are every day individuals who have talent, but haven't dropped their whole lives to do this-they are teachers like Clay Aiken, or single moms like Fantasia, who took a chance, and look what came out of it. I think if you go into the experience with the thought process that you have nothing to lose, and only the possibility of attaining leaps and bounds, why not try out? Obviously if you want to make your life and living out of a singing career, maybe walking into American Idol with all your eggs in one basket is not such a good call.

Well I've been told by honest people that i can sing so I plan to try Canadian Idol, since i am. I plan to when I'm old enough. Make sure that you have someone who will be honest even if it means hurting your feelings, tell you if you're good or not. I'm saying this because this season, a lot of people are trying only because they want to get fame the same way William Hung did.

well i only like the part when they cast people, because there are some funny people how can't sing and they make fun of him., but if i had a good voice then i don't know, it's a lot of work, plus their are so many singers that didn't go to American idol and they are good famous singers, so I'll find another way, but i'll keep american idol in mind, just in case something happens and i don't want to pay someone to make me famous when i have the voice and looks

i guess it is a good way to get discovered, if you want to wait the hours of lines to get it.
and if you want to do American idol, you need to make SURE that you are extremely good. i mean, getting put down on national television wouldn't be most peoples first choice lol. when you watch the tryouts (personally i think they are the funnest part) you see so many people and think "what were they thinking?"
i think its a great opportunity if you are super good. and know you are. and others know you are.
if you want to take the risk of embarrassing yourself in front of America, go right ahead! or it could be the best thing you ever did?

if i could sing well and people told me that i had a good voice, i would definitely try out for American Idol. It's one thing to think you have a good voice, but it's a nothing thing when people tell you that you really do have a good voice.

here's the biggest problem with thoes kind of shows. People who have real talent (like opera singers) are not welcome. They should call the show American Pop Idol since that's all they really want! I know plenty of people who could really make it, but they wouldn't make it past the initial audtions becuase they sing operatic style (classical style). It's kind of annoying for me becuase they don't let the people who should be on there to do their thing!

No, because I wouldn't make it if I could sing well and had a good voice.
Seems like they only take people who cant sing at all and have a horrible voice.
