Reality is what we have to deal with even if it is an illusion.

It is not possible, as far as I know, to demonstraight through any means that this is or is not all an illusion.

As the means to which you try and demonstrate such a thing could be an illusion in its self.

If you wish to read more stuff on it I would recommend you research into Solipism. Wikipeda has a decent article you may find interesting.

It may not answer you question directly, but if you have not read about it before it may open new avenues of thought you may not have come across before.

Further reading on a sightly different but I think useful in the overall sense to "understand" is looking at Free Will and Determinism.

You will find an answer to Solipism here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006030107103 there is also the link the wikipedia article there.

Edit: Personaly, I choose to live life based on the assumption that it is real. Irrational I know! ;)

Most people consider life "real". Yet some people live a life that is decidedly "unreal".

Real is what our healthy senses deliver to a properly working brain - about all this stuff around us.

Humans sometimes think too much and get confused about the basic nature of reality. You may be doing this. Go out and run as fast as you can, as long as you can. That deep gasping you hear?" That's "real".

What constitutes sufficient proof is dependent on one’s experiences, knowledge, beliefs and attitudes. It is different for everyone.

When the wise and spiritual refer to our world as a World of Illusion and material, physical life as unreal, they are only declaring their knowledge and belief that there is a Greater World that is come. One we all will enter when we die and leave this world. And in that World – the World of Spirit, things will not be as they are here. Things, to oversimplify, will be better – a just and loving world, a glorious and blissful existence. From the Spirit viewpoint, earth life is but a dream.

Everything in our minds is an abstraction (illusion). Our minds are inadequate to contain the complexities of reality.

We need to be aware of the difference between reality, our thoughts, and our sense perceptions. We gather information through 5 senses, but there are other instruments and facilities to represent 'reality'. Reality is far too complex for us to process or understand completely. We always rely on abstractions which are representations of what we think of as reality. Our brain can comprehend the abstract the concept of infinity and time. So to, the brain can comprehend reality, but only as an abstract concept.

Einstein and S.I. Hiakawa wrote about models of reality from different perspectives. It is important to not to confuse the model with reality. We are constantly trying to improve our models of reality, but the models are not reality. Perception is not reality.

Some ancient Hindu philosophers thought that all that we see
is Maya (illusion). Their reasons are many which are above
that of common knowledge. A few of them are mentioned below:

(1) At the physical level: Science knows that the
inter-atomic space is much more compared to the space
occupied by atoms in a molecule. Your big body consists of
many billions of molecules. Compared to the hugeness of
inter-atomic space inside your body, you are nothing.

(2) At the mental level: Your sub-conscious mind is
influenced by Adhi Bhouthika (lower collective psychic
energy). Your conscious mind is influenced by Adhi Atmika
(human collective psychic energy). Your super conscious mind
is influenced by Adhi Daivika (higher collective psychic
energy). Compared to those psychic energies, your personal
freedom to think is nothing.

(3) At the soul level: The Advaita Siddhantam says that
Atma (soul) present in your body is a piece of Paramatma
(infinite soul, Almighty). Almighty is eternal. Almighty is
Omnipotent. Almighty is infinite. Compared to the infinite
Almighty. you are nothing.

But yet....you know that you are real!

The Almighty has chosen you, and every other person for
a particular purpose. The aim of life is to understand
the greatness of the creator. And to search for the
purpose for which a soul is given human life. This
purpose differs from person to person because it is
dependent on the past Karma of the soul. (It is as
different as our finger prints, no two are alike). But
one thing is sure. Human beings are the highest of all
creation. The rest of the creation is intended for the
use of human beings. All people are expected to enjoy
the creation. Since creation itself is divine, all
people are expected to keep their lives as happily as
possible without interference with others.

When you understand the pupose of your life, then you
will derive the highest happiness of your life.
