Most likely your VHS tapes have copy protection throughout. DVD recorders are designed to recognize this. Sorry, you've been foiled!

There are a couple of possible reasons:
1. Your VHS tapes are too old and may have become useless. Try to playback your tapes before trying to record them to make sure they're ok.
2.Your VCR head are too dirty (it happens to mine a lot since I don't use it often.
3.Your VCR is from a different region/system (like PAL-M for exemple). DVD recorders are usually compatible everywhere but VCR's are not. It happened to me once and I used a different VCR and it worked.

John,

You have to bypass the copy guard.

Go to best Buy and get a "Go-DVD" made by Sima. It will remove the copy guard.

I have one and archived our entire VHS library without a hitch.
