Sometimes that happens but once they get the fluid out of their nostrils they usually breathe on their own.

The vast majority 95% breath without assistance. If a baby had a the cord wrapped around the neck, problems with the placenta, prematurity, or are breach it may take some stimulation to get the baby breathing.

Doctors no longer slap the baby on the rear to start breathing but will flick the heals and rub the back. If that does not work a few breaths with an oxygen mask usually works.

There is no reason not to assume that this baby is totally normal.

That's not normal, and actually a bit worrying. I hope your friend had her baby at the hospital where Baby could get proper care!

Babies ,before being born, are contained in, basically, a sac of liquid so they breath like fish .
When they're born , their little lungs have to inflate and deflate even more and they have to get used to breathing in a new atmosphere.
They're not really used to it untill about an hour or so.
But doctors may use an oxygen mask or suction out baby's nose or mouth to prevent air blockage caused by snot, saliva, liquid, vernix, etc.

The baby is generally supposed to breath once born, but sometimes if the lungs are not developed enough or if there is the fluid in the lungs or there was some other type of trauma during birth then that can happen

I don't know if it's normal, some babies just have more trouble beginning to breathe, while others let out a big scream.

My son gave us trouble in the beginning, he didn't breathe good at all. He ended up needing a ventilator to help him for a few weeks.
It all depends I guess on the baby.

Most do, but do need help. I would say that the baby is normal, it may just have took longer to get all of the secretions, and fluids out of its breath way.

So I am assuming they put the baby in NICU then.. They have to clean out the nose and throat but the baby should be breathing shortly after that. Then usually make them scream to make sure the lungs are clear. But it took that long to "breathe" then they should have put the baby in the NICU.

Most babies will breathe on their own immediately, but it's apparently a VERY complicated process for baby to take his first breath. Everything has to happen just so. Therefore, it's not uncommon for a baby to need a little help getting started, especially if he's premature.

well, my friends baby is premature, so he had a hard time breathing on his own for a couple days since his lungs were so small. Babies are born with some things they just know how to do, like grasp their parents fingers and stuff!

Its not normal but it does happen. Most babies won't start breathing after they are born until their umbillical cord is cut.
