First of all...be careful who you approach and how you advertise. Safety is the most important thing!
You need to make a list of people you know through school, neighborhood, church, community groups, parent's friends. Call them if time is extremely short, or you could make a small poster and hand it to them. Do not put posters out where just anyone could see them!
If my twelve-year-old needed money, I would suggest this:
1) Babysitting - call people you know, even if they don't have children...they might be able to refer you to someone else. If you aren't able to babysit on your own yet, some of my seventh grade students have "mother's helpers jobs" where they entertain the kids while the mom works at home.
2) Housecleaning or yard work - I would hire a 12 yr. old to shovel snow, rake my grass, wash windows, dust and vacuum, scrub outdoor furniture, or wash my car.
3) Think of your skills....Are you good with computers? Could you teach an elderly person how to do email? Could you tutor a younger person in math or reading? Do you play an instrument?
4) Be sure to talk to a favorite teacher, librarian, or guidance councilor...he or she might have some great ideas depending upon where you live...or could give you connections to a job.
I wish you luck! What a nice gesture that you are willing to work in order to buy someone else a gift. Best wishes!

I have no instant answers for you but for future reference, you could offer your services to neighbours, especially the elderly to do their smaller shopping, or pick up items from dry cleaner or other quick legwork.

Do what I did when I was younger, I asked grandma and grandpa for the money. I paid them back by mowing the grass and doing errands for grandma.
Easy money.
