It's hard to put a literal description to it, especially since the music speaks for itself. Picture this:
You're 16 years old. It's 1969. You love The Beatles, The Doors and The Who, and you realize that the Yardbirds have broken new ground, but they still lack that certain... I don't know... something. I mean, The Yardbirds and The Who are great, but they're still kinda fluffy; not "dark" like The Doors are.
Anyway, so you hear from a friend that Jimmy Page is doing a new thing and it's cool and you should check it out. So you save up your allowance for, like, two weeks and buy "Led Zeppelin." Not sure what to expect, you put the needle on the record and you hear that first wooden "pop." Then two notes. Those first two notes of "Good Times, Bad Times." OK, you aren't sure what you heard. It was a little more distorted than what you're used to, but they do it again. And then you hear Bonham just digging into the bass drum. He gets a sound outta that thing that almost sounds like he's playing it with both feet. And it just keeps COMING. The whole album just changes everything.

Now, I wasn't alive yet in the sixties, but I can imagine how this, even just this first album, changes everything. Not just in a broad, cultural sense as the roots of hard rock and heavy metal, but on a personal level. Like they reached an uncharted region of the soul itself.

what makes led zeppelin so intriguing is incredible musicianship. not only are the considered a huge influence in metal (which Dfirefox touched on but metal does indeed have blues roots and even classical music roots) but no one before or since has been able to re create that original of a sound. Back to the metal explanation, people tend to poo poo that idea because they just see metal as noise when really it is more like classical music (Bach, Beethoven, etc.) than any other music form out , just listen to one epic guitar solo and you'll realize the similarities. back to what makes them so great. Robert Plant has arguably the best rock voice in the history of the genre. heavy yet not abrasive, he could create a whole slew of emotions in his listeners. the musicians that created the backdrop for his vocals were no shlubs either. they made some of the most complicated yet beautifully harmonious musical arrangements ever recorded. Dancing Days is a great example of this. the riff that jimmy page opens the song with would sound hideous were it not for the rest of the band creating a sound to make the song work. perhaps thats what drives the led zeppelin machine, a total band effort. without one piece of that machine it breaks down and doesn't work. thats rare in todays music with weak vocalists and strong guitarists. so i t could be the teamwork or the stark contrast in the quality of music in musicianship that we see today. whatever it is they are an epic band that will live on as legend

Their music was way before their time. Many people think that it is all "heavy metal rock n' roll",but that is not the case.
Much of their music has blues and soul.
I have been recording their Lp's ,converting them to tape, and I will convert the tape to Cd's after I am finished.
I am on Zepplin II now.
Great music !

They were one of the first, if not the first "heavy metal" band.
They had a terrific live show and wrote great music. Lots of charisma too.

They were awesome, but if you look at Jimmy Page now, he looks like an old gezzer. I still love their music. ~~~~
