I have a developing reef tank and the lighting i have has feet that wont let the top fit on. Do i need the glass there or can it be open?? Thanks

Over all it's far better to have a top of some sort over the tank. I would suggest going to a glass shop with the exact measurements you need and even where cut out to go around the feet of your light would need to be. Have them cut the pieces from low iron glass so more of your lighting spectrum will make it through the glass.

Your going to be using more energy heating your tank if you don't have the top on. It doesn't allow for the heat to stay within the water. Also, why would you have a light that doesn't fit your tank. You should invest in one that will fit with the tank that you have.

If you do not have a lid then the water will evaporate quicker or you run the risk of having a fish jump out (if you have jumpers). But no, you do not need a lid
