One of the only advantages to eating out is a chance to socialize and to enjoy prepared food without spending time cooking or cleaning. If you're going to do this alone....

First of all, consider a small, family-owned diner. Some places have a greasy spoon type atmosphere but they have great food, and a friendly staff. You won't get formal service, but eating alone at a formal restaurant is foolish. Obviously, I can't make a recommendation for you, because it all depends on where you live, but I imagine you probably already know of a few local places that fit this bill.

I'd try to avoid fast food or any franchise establishment. If you were going to do this, you might as well go to the drive thru and take your food home. You'd be more comfortable, and you could eat in a cleaner environment where you could also relax to your own music or watch your own TV.

Any sushi bar will treat you well. If you want to chat, the chef will chat. If you want to read a book you brought along, feel free. Or talk to your neighbors on each side of you. If you go into a place looking like you'll engage in a little conversation, you'll have a great time.

If you like seafood you could go to Red Lobster, or If you like a varity of foods you could also go to The Cheesecake Factory. They have great cheesecake and also, some really good food. I think that The Cheescake factory has over 100 different flavor's of cheesecake.
