If it's a keyboard based instrument you're referring to then it would be called a Synthesizer. These babies can 'Sample' sounds and then allow you to use the keyboard to work up and down the scale just as if they were musical notes and the only limit to what is available is your own imagination. A dogs bark, a sneeze, a train whistle or even the screech of a cars brakes, each can be sampled and then played back as 'music' to fit whatever it is that you need to suit a particular tune.
