I am currently looking into building my own custom pc and have recently picked the motherboard i want.

The motheboard in question is a "Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2 Skt AM2, On Board VGA, PCI-E, DDR2, SATA2 RAID, LAN, HD Audio, USB2, mATX" however the problem i have is that i am not that knowledgable when it comes to motherboards.

Could someone please explain to me the basic deatils of the board in question and also whether i have to buy a seperate Sound & Graphics Card or if they are included in the moherboard.

Gigabyte makes great boards. I believe they come with lifetime warranty on all their boards. It does have both on-board Graphics and Audio which are decent for being on-board. From your specs you will also need:

1. AMD Athlon64 FX/ 64 X2 / 64 socket AM2 processor. This is AMD's newest class of CPU's that take advantage of DDR2 RAM.

2. Has on-board VGA graphics. If you play games you may want to upgrade to an add-on PCI-E graphics card. Nvidia and Ati are the 2 major video card manufacturers. PCI-E is the latest and fastest type of "bus" connection.

3.DDR2 RAM (random access memory). Newest and for the most part faster RAM. Get DDR2 800. Get RAM in pairs to enable dual channel which doubles the speed at which the memory sends and receives data.

4.SATA2 RAID. SATA is vast improvement over older ATA/IDE
hard drives and now optical (CD,DVD) drives. SATA2 tranfers data at speeds up to 3.0 gigabytes per second. A RAID (Redundant Array of Independant (Inexpensive) Drives) can be set up in one of four different arraingements. RAID's biggest benefit is that they provide a continuous back-up of all information in your system. This board also provides ATA-133 support for two drives (currently this is the way hard/optical drives are connected). SATA optical drives are just entering the market.

5. On-board LAN, Audio, USB. This is standard for most motherboards.

6. mATX form factor. This board will fit in microATX cases

For a power supply go with Cooler Master, Antec, OCZ, Thermaltake, Ultra, Corsair, or Zalman. Power supply is not a place to skimp on.

It comes with both an integrated audio and video so you don't need to buy a sound card or video card.

Make sure it comes with a good waranty though - I've had nothing but problems with gigabyte stuff.

All motherboards have some basic sound and video capability. But nobody would settle for the lack luster performance. The sound may be livable, but you still need a dedicated video accelerator.
