Recently I went home for the weekend. My sister, her boyfriend, and I went to visit our grandmother. At the house my sister sat on the couch with her boyfriend, arms intertwined, hands folded, head on shoulder, and kissed. My grandmother is very old fashioned. When we left I told my sister maybe it would be a good idea the next time they go to grandma's if they would try to refrain from showing any affection. My sister went balistic and said that it is her god given right to kiss her boyfriend (of one month) in front of whomever she wants and that because my father and his wife kiss all the time it shouldnt be an issue (they've been married almost 15 years). I told her she knows what is expected in our family and that she should show just a little more respect to the woman that raised us. Later that day my grandmother called me and was complaining about my sister's display of affection, this only varifies my thoughts on the matter. Was I out of line for advising my sis to be respectful

i think you were right. if you know that your grandmother doesn't approve of openly displaying affection then you can tell her, as she is your sister after all. you weren't out of line, i would have done the same thing. i would never kiss my boyfriend in front of my parents or any family members anyway. you'r right to have told her, if she doesn't it again and gets talked to by your grandmother, at least you warned her before hand.xx

Does it matter who was right? Your sister's behavior upset your grandmother, so why did she call you to complain about it instead of calling your sister?

My family has done the same thing for eons, it seems. X does something to upset Y, so Y discusses it with Q - and so on - and nothing ever gets settled. I've begun asking the relative who is complaining about another relative if they've discussed the problem with that person. If the answer is no, I'll gently suggest that they do so and quickly change the subject; if the answer is yes, I then ask why we're discussing it. It seems to be working, little by little, and they're leaving me out of the middle - thank heaven.

You may want to try this approach. You're not in charge of anyone's behavior but your own, and this way you don't have to worry about being right all the time.

Besides, being right all the time is a pretty exhausting way to live. Been there, done that - don't bother with it any more.

No you were in the right. You need to realize one thing, some people do not have respect for elders. The guy she was allowing to kiss on her should be told, that your Grandmother doesn't like it.I would never take them two back over there to visit.I know how embarrassing that kind of behavior can be---be blunt and tell them both---no more, not with you there..

I certainly don't think you were wrong for advising her to be discreet, although it was her choice one way or the other. However, I'm surprised that she didn't give enough of a damn to consider someone else's proprieties. But also, your grandmother should understand the situation, even if she doesn't like it.

before everything, i do no longer think of this is trustworthy of you to anticipate it replaced right into a mistake to furnish you to her mom. She replaced into for sure very youthful, and it replaced into uncomplicated throughout the time of that era for the grandparents to take the youngster and supply it a solid abode. the actuality that she did no longer attempt to have a relationship with you, I chalk as much as an attempt to step back and enable her mom determine you without interference. you do no longer say what she suggested approximately your Grandma which you stumble on offensive, so I won't remark. in line with danger you opt for for a raffle to take a seat together with her and communicate a number of those issues. yet i do no longer think of you will possibly desire to be offended approximately her imparting you with up - i'm specific she did that out of problem for you. in the top, in case you do no longer choose for to have a relentless relationship together with her, it relatively is genuinely your call. yet i might hate to confirm you hold close onto all this anger. it would be superb in case you ought to a minimum of come to 3 awareness.

"Who" was right, not "whom."
Of course your grandmother is right; your sister should show a little respect, but she can't show any because she doesn't have any respect. If your parents can't talk to her, don't waste your breath.
