As you know the Phillies bullpen isn't what you call "great". During the winter meatings the Phillies were hoping to get relief help and didn't but did end up with Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton. With the hole open after Randy Wolf was signed with the Dodgers they only really needed one new pitcher. Now that they have six. There are two possiblitys with Lieber. One is that they can trade him for bullpen help or they are even talking about putting Eaton in the bullpen incase of injury in one of the starters. GM Pat Gillick and manager Charlie Manuel have been talking about going into spring training and the regular season with all 6 starters so it looks like the Eaton bullpen thing is going to happen. The only problem is they would be way overpaying Eaton if he were to go into the bullpen. But hey, with all the unsecpeted action Gillick made late in the winter your guess might be as good as mine. They also were talking about trading Rowand for some bullpen help but it looks like thats not going to happen. I don't know about you but i'm ready to see an improved Phillies bullpen so this year can be the year for our Philadelphia Phillies!

I'd say that 6 SP is an enviable position to be in. Everyone says that Lieber may go, hopefully for a good reliever.
Check out the article below about the Phils early arrivals at spring training; It makes that point on Lieber.

Aside from the injury possibility in their own camp, the Phillies are also waiting to see what happens with other teams. Lieber was shopped over the winter, but Pat Gillick apparently didn't like what was offered in return. If a key pitcher for another team is injured in spring training or if another team decides they'd rather have more experience in their rotation, they may be inclined to give up more in a trade.
Should the Phillies deal Lieber, they will almost certainly acquire a setup man and possibly a bench player in return.

You did answer your own question. Lieber's been trade bait since the end of last season and no other team's wanted him. He could be saved in case of injury or traded for a right handed bat to back up Howard. Besides, having six pitchers in camp is not a bad idea for the Phillies since they notoriously have lousy pitching staffs. But! things are looking better there.

You almost answered your question yourself. The biggest reason is injuries. You never know when a SP is going to go down, and being in need of one puts you at the mercy of the trading demans of others or the rush of minor leaguers that arent ready.
As far as trade bait. Lieber is the odd man out right now, his name is out there in trade talks. The Phils want a good set up man. If they dont trade him, Eaton will probably end up in the bullpen to start off.

All the ptchers are competting for the 5 starting roles. The pitcher that proves to be the least good out of the 6 will be the long relief pitcher. Long relief is a huge role in baseball today becasue pitches these days are very concerned about hurting their arms so as soon as they start throwing to many balls in a row they have the catcher come out and talk with them. Then the ctaher signals the manager and the manager brings in the londg relief if it is in the like 4th or 5th inning. He won't use long relief in the 7th or 8th inning becasue those can be split between the setup man and the closer.

I think you're right about Lieber. For the first time in a long time the Phillies have a nice problem. They will be set before opening day and my feeling is that the Phillies will win the pennant. I've had this feeling all winter long. I just like what they've done lately and am looking for 90 plus wins this year.

You can never have enough pitching, according to the old cliche. Obviously, one of them will be traded, or dropped to the bullpen. Keep in mind that Cole Hamels was a rookie last year and needs to show he wasn't only a one year wonder. Hate to see them get rid of Leiber because he had an off year last season and is poised to bounce back. I see the starting five as Leiber, Hamels, Garcia, Myers, and Moyer, with Adam Eaton as the odd man out.

The philles are looking to trade John Liber because he is 37 and it is his final year of his contract. There have been discussions with the padres for their super setup man scott linebrink, but the Philles really want bullpen help. They will either trade rowand for a reliever and then Liber for a centerfielder or they will deal Liber for a reliver.
