I want to learn to play an instrument at my ripe old age of 54. I own a flute and took a few lessons, but now I'm wondering if it's the right instrument for me. I have an interest in piano and guitar also. What are some guidelines for choosing the right one?

choosing an instrument can be a little nerve-wracking. the biggest considerations are

1) what can you afford to spend.
2) how much room do you have.

A piano can be a lot of fun to learn how to play, but can be relatively expensive and takes up a fair amount of real estate inside your house.

A guitar can also be fun to play, personally I'm 46 and played piano for 41 years, and bought a guitar in December 2006.

But the most important thing in choosing an instrument is, what kind of music do YOU like to play, and can you play that kind of music on the instrument you've chosen.

Good Luck

I would recommend looking at what style of music you would like to play. If you don't know, then what type of music do you listen to and what are the primary instruments. Which ones stand out the most, which ones want you to play music.

I believe the Piano is a little bit easier to learn than the guitar, just because all of the keys are laid out in front of you. The guitar is not laid out as simple, but with time can be seen just as a piano. The other advantage of learning the piano is that it is a little bit easier to undertand music theory on the piano as a starting instrument. You can really grasp the idea of different keys when it is all right in front of you. Any instruments gives you the freedom of creativity so you can't go wrong.

Also if you do like the idea of a piano, but can't afford the money or space for one, then look into portable keyboards. I just recently got a midi control keyboard with some software that allows me to play thousands of instruments. Unfortunately there is no onboard sound with these midi controllers, but they are a lot of fun if you have a computer that can handle it.

Also congrats on wanting to pickup an instrument at the ripe old age. Good luck.

It all depends on what mussic you like. Youre gonna want to play some tunes that you love. Every instrument is great because you can express yourself threw it.
If the music you like has a lot of guitar choose guitar
If the music you like has alot of piano take piano
etc.

The guitar is awesome to learn. It easy to pick up, once your fingers can move independently. It is the biggest stress-reliever in my life. THe only bad thing is that it is not arthritis's best friend.
