Can you explain the appeal of chick lit?

It's an easy read that requires little to no brainpower. The story line is always vaguely fantasy-like, with a prince-charming esque character and a female lead that most women readers relate to. This female lead somehow ends up with the prince-charming character, letting the reader believe that all will be right in their social life... eventually.

They're basically feel-good pieces of fluff. The male equivalent is probably a James Bond movie.

God knows. I'm a chick, and I hate chick lit. I can't stand something that's been done over so many times I can see the next move (and the others who've read the book gawk in awe..."I NEVER saw that coming!") after the first page, or sometimes just by looking at the front or back of the book. That's not a story I want to bother wasting my life on. I want literature that stimulates the mind, makes you think "Oh yeah...that's interesting", or "I never thought of that". I guess chick lit is for people who want to immerse themselves in the fantasy of the books, pretend that all the fluffy, gooey stuff that oozes from between the covers of those books is real for a while. Me, I really don't see the benefit. I'd rather get a good laugh from a satirical piece than read a "romantic comedy".

Well, it's one of those light reads which is good to take on vacation, or to just tune out and temporarily forget about the bad things that are going on in one's life. Most of those books have romance in them, so they give some hope of true love being possible, and they are generally inspirational, even if far-fetched in content.
