You can, but theoretically you would not be a whole person. If youre taking a sociology class why dont you have any text books with this sort of stuff in?

people are social animals. our sense of identity is formed by our interactions with other people. without these interactions, we would not develop a personality, or ability to relate to other humans - all the stuff that makes us a *person*, rather than just an animal.

so, it depends what you mean by *survive*, and what you mean by *support*. we would instinctively read this question as though support meant only positive interactions. but you could look at *support* in a neutral sense - meaning interactions that help to create a sense of identity - in which case it woudl include relationships that were abusive as well as those which were more nurturing. any interaction develops and maintains the sense of self - possibly not in *healthy* ways, but develops it all the same.
if by *survive* you mean continue to function as a human being within society, then i think it is a poor question - because to function within society by definition means that we have support networks in place - they may be at very low level, but they are there. even people who seem to be loners function within some network of *support* - interactions with people in shops, work colleagues, answering questions on yahoo!, family etc etc if you mean continue to be alive, then yes, but then i would have to ask whether the *person* is surviving, or just the animal shell.

google 'feral children' for some interesting stuff on what happens when you grow up without human interaction.

A person can survive, but its about what quality of life they experience. I have worked with people who have lived without social and emotional support and to some extent abuse and they survive!! But they become unable to interact and feel and empathise and experience life in a way that we as humans would consider living!!

I think the only way you could survive without any support was if you were stranded on a desert island, then you would probably go potty any way.
We all need support from some one at some time in our life

You just remember that what one HAS to HAVE in order to survive is Light, Air, Water, Food and Shelter.

The rest... would be very good if we would have: love, a car, sweets, cigarettes, a good job, education, a pc, ... you name it; we can survive without all these things ...
It is all in our minds: I'll die if I can't have you... I can't live without my pets... and other crap alike.

Necessary is the thing that if you take it away, any human being would die.
By shelter is meant cloths in general and or a home in cold countries
