if we didnt know how, then we wouldnt be here answering your question.

we wouldnt be able to write letters to communicate with distant people. any information regarding the internet would be pointless.

without the ability to write, you lose the ability to document information. many archives would not be around, we would have no way to document crimes, events, dates and such.

just some examples of the importance of it. without documentation creating technology and continuing along with conjectures and intelligence would be much harder. if you cant document how you created a long and confusing process, how would u remember what you did? would we have the lightbulb today if he just created it without documenting how he did so? information would die with people. and we would come to a halt in improving ourselves in a technological sense

Just imagine for a moment that you could neither read nor write. Think of all the things you could not do. They would extend all the way from reading instructions on how to prepare a food mix to reading road signs, finding addresses, being able to choose which TV program you wanted to watch, selecting the proper bill to pay for something, using Yahoo Answers (or any other internet application) writing letters, reading books, etc.etc.etc.
If you want a taste of what it might be like, go to your nearest ethnic community, a fairly large one, where there is a significant population in that particular ethnic group, and where the signs are all written in a foreign language. If you can find Persian, Chinese, Russian or Japanese, all the better, as anything written in a Romance language can be derived, to a certain extent, by English speakers. Spend an afternoon there trying to figure out what's happening in the community. Read the bulletin boards, or purchase one of the newspapers. That's what being illiterate feels like.
You would also not be able to use your bank cards, your credit cards (you can't write, so you can't make a signature) obtain a driver's license, read airline schedules, movie marquees, etcetcetc.

Well, I think it's important for people to know how to read and write, because that means that they have some education. If they didn't, then they wouldn't get jobs or be able to buy a house or anything for that matter. They would be completely stupid.

That's my input on it. Hope I helped. Good luck! :)

people who don't know how to read or write live in a very small world
the only way they can communicate is through the spoken word
and that is very limited
even simple things like reading a map or following a recipe is impossible for them to do

when you really think about it---it's a very sad life

If people couldn't read/write, they wouldn't be able to read your essay explaining why they should be able to read/write.

Seriously, people need to communicate and spread ideas. Reading/writing is how it's done.

If I couldn't read I wouldn't be answering this question. If I couldn't write I wouldn't be putting my answer in words.
