You will if you get a state ID or DL in all states but five. Or if you want to get on an airplane.

The Real ID act started off as H.R. 418, which passed the House (261-161-11) and went stagnant. It was then attached as a rider on a military spending bill (H.R. 1268) by Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R) of Wisconsin (the author) and was voted upon (100-0) . It was signed into public law (109-13) on May 11, 2005

After May 11, 2008, "a Federal agency may not accept, for any official purpose, a driver's license or identification card issued by a State to any person unless the State is meeting the requirements" specified in the Real ID Act. States remain free to also issue non-complying licenses and ID's, so long as these have a unique design and a clear statement that they cannot be accepted for any Federal identification purpose. The federal Transportation Security Administration is responsible for security check-in at airports, so bearers of non-compliant documents would no longer be able to travel on common carrier aircraft.

Already, you must have a Social Security card to get a real job. You have to give your card number when you make major purchases or apply for credit. An ID card with your picture on it might help to decrease the risk of identity theft--then again, it would be something else to keep up with. I think your current driver's license serves the purpose of identifying you unless you leave the country and then you'd need a passport. I don't think any ID card would be the "Mark of the Beast".

We have this discussion going on in the UK. The answer is no chance as it fundamentally changes the relationship between the individual and the state.

At the moment the state exists at our collective behest to serve the people. Make me carry an identity paper / card and I exist and answer to the state.

Oh and let's get out the list of countries which thought it was a goodun. Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union etc etc etc.....

ID cards are pointless. Criminals will fake them, illegal immigrants won't get them, resident terrorists will have them already (on account of being citizens), foreign terrorists won't be in the country long enough to need to get one. The only people to get them will be the people least likely to be of any use - the law abiding citizens. Utterly, utterly pointless and a complete waste of money.

I have a drivers license, food discount cards for various stores, credit cards, buy stuff on line and a social security card. What more could they find out about me that they aren't already tracking?

Your social security card already serves as a de facto national ID card, just slap a picture on it and call it a day.

Politicians in USA will never agree on a card so we never have to worry about that. Politicians will argue till the end of time and nothing has ever, will ever, or might ever get done.

In case you haven't realized it yet, we are more and more turning into what I call a "Police State." Before you know it, they will try to eliminate our rights to bear arms.
