The point should be to communicate a meaningful message, which few rappers do. Yes, kids will imitate what they see and hear on TV, but you should make sure you're providing a positive example if your goal is to be a role model and rapper. The best MC's, though, are not concerned with fame or admiration, but using an art form to transcend their limitations, rising above through poetry. I think you should listen to some De La Soul, Rakim, Public Enemy, Saul Williams, etc. for inspiration.

If you meant role models then there's a mixed response.
Musical artists who hail from the Hip-Hop/Rap genre are known for promoting some illegal things: drugs, sex, alcohol, violence and domestic abuse among other things. Many artists from the genre have spent time in jail for various crimes that they've committed so there's not really a good going for the type of music right now.
But I'd say if you try to correct these things and don't include anything supporting those things in your lyrics then you could certainly be looked on as a role model by a lot of people, from kids to their parents and many respected musical critics across the world. If you keep it clean and learn to really get kids' attention with positive lyrics you could certainly go down as a role model.

To make money. Why would anyone consider a rapper a role model? They are seen mostly as thugs and killers. After all they want "street cred". So the few that give them their image destroy it for the ones that aren't like that. Although I don't imagine that there are very many that aren't like that. Just like they claim they want things to be better where they were from but you see them in their gated communities. They aren't back in their 'hood or even trying to help it for the most part.
