I know there are sites where this can be done, but since I don't have a cell phone, is there a way for me to receive messages from my friend (who has a cell), either through my e-mail or through the site that I use.
I could use recommendations of sites that work with someone who does not have a cell (me being the initial sender).
I have seen sites where I can send a text but not receive a msg back, that does not work for me.

It depends on their service provider.

For example, T-Mobile allows you to send a text message to a phone using the 1234567890@tmomail.net address. (Replace 1234567890 with the actual areacode and phone number.) That person can then respond to the text message back to your email address.

I'm sure other providers do very similar things.

you simply get their telephone email address and send the email as normal. ex: 202-123-4567@mycingularcom. If they reply, you will receive an email. All email companies have this capability.

But remember, everyone who has a cell will not reply back because it cost them.

I hope this helps.

You can use AIM or AIM-like programs to contact people through text messaging. My friend does that with me, I just haven't figured out how to respond back. You might ask your friends if the have instant messaging programs on their phones and you can contact them that way instead of text messaging.

I use yahoo to send text to my boyfriends phone. Simplest way is to have them text your email address and then you'll have their phone email/text access.
