hamsters dig in the wild, its what they spend ninety percent of thier awake time doing, so i suggest more bedding, try several types of bedding, corn cob, newspaper, pine, aspen even potting soil vermiculite, pearlite

and when they are digging they are chewing, so get natural wood chews and treats he has to work on getting too

you can get empty toilet paper rolls and stuff them with some bedding and some carrot chunks, then seal it up with either string, cable ties and give him a new one each day to shred apart to get his treats

Why do you think it's bored? Hamsters sleep about 18 hours a day. They are nocturnal, but may be awake a little during the day. They really become active during the night after 8-10 PM. How much time do you spend handling your hamster each day? You should be handling it at least 15-20 minutes 1-3 times a day while their awake. Don't wake your hamster up by picking it up, this can cause it to bite due to being startled. We have 21 hamsters and every one is held at least once a day. Now there is the occasion when one of our Russian dwarfs refuses to be held, so we leave that one alone for the day and try the next day. Syrian hamsters (large breed) are very sociable ones with humans. How old is your hamster? The younger (6-12 weeks)they are, the more sleep they need. All our Russian dwarfs are 13 & 14 months, one Syrian is almost 2 he has 4 children that are 14 months, the rest vary in age from 4 months to 1 /1/2 years. They all have different activity levels. Make sure the hamster has enough room to move about even with the toys. If you have a Syrian and are perhaps thinking of a cage mate, only get a Russian dwarf, never another Syrian, they will fight or have babies depending on the sex. A dwarf need to have another dwarf of same age or they too can fight. 8 of our 12 Syrians all have a Russian dwarf for a cage mate, one has 2 dwarf cage mates. Best thing is they're genetically unable to mate, som we have put males and females together.

I copied this from my favorite site for you:
Other possible furnishings are ladders, teeter totters (seesaws), tunnels made out of toilet paper or paper towel tubes, hamster houses, nest boxes, blocks of wood (for climibing and chewing), ropes to swing on, etc. There are many different ideas for furnishings and toys to keep that playful hammie happy and entertained.

Try homemade toys! You can come up with just about anything, just make sure it is nontoxic. Try a toilet paper roll. Hamsters love these and they're virtually free. Also, try using plastic water bottles as tubes. Cut the bottles with scissors very evenly. Stick one bottle slightly inside the other and tape them together. You can make long or short tunnels for crawling and climbing in.

Cut the bottom of an egg carton so the bottom of it has 12 open holes. You can turn the carton upside down and stuff it with bedding and let your hamsters use it as a nest or a fun toy.

Wooden pet chew toys are an ideal choice. Wood items should ideally be safe (stay away from cedar or other evergreen type woods), and pesticide and chemical free. If you are unsure a type of wood is safe, it is probably best to stick with items made for use by pets. Pesticide-free fruit tree branches from your backyard or hardwood wood blocks or shapes that are not chemically treated are okay for your hamster.

Wood ladders and climbing blocks are great for hamsters. If you can't find wood ladders in the hamster section of your pet store, check the bird section. Any of these wooden items are bound to be chewed as well, as that is natural for hamsters, so be prepared to replace them as needed.

Take an empty tissue box or any other cardboard box with an opening in it, and place it in your hamster's cage.

Just give your hammy an empty coffee- or cocoa can.

These are just some random storebought or homemade ideas. Enjoy!

We bought a lot for ours, had a roller ball , sleeping bed , wheel, they where attached to the tubes all through the house on a shelf along the walls - bought a piece a pay check and the kids just loved watching them play. Had one and ended up with two. thought he needed a play mate and that helped to.

Toilet paper rolls work, and chew wood pieces at the pet shop along with an occasional treat like a washed piece of carrot.
