Simply put. A player eligible for arbitration submits what he thinks he should be paid. The team he plays on submits what they think he should be paid and an arbitrator decides who's right.

It happens in one of two ways, if the player has been in the league for 4 years, he is arbitration eligible. He must play for his team, but if they cannot agree on a salary, the team submits the amount it wants to pay and the player submits the amount that he thinks he deserves to an arbitrator or panel of arbitrators. They decide for one or the other. The other way is when a player's contract is over, the team has the right to offer him arbitration. If he accepts, he is with that team for another year, with the salary to be determined. A team will do that in order to get a draft choice if another team signs that player. In 2005, the Red Sox did not want second baseman Tony Graffanino, but offered him arbitration with the expectation that he would sign elsewhere and that team would have to give the Red Sox a draft choice. To the surprise of the Red Sox, Graffanino accepted arbitration even though it was clear they did not want him and would not be using him. He is a starter caliber second baseman and was awarded a substantial salary by the arbitrator. The Red sox then had to trade him subject to that salary. Probably more than you wanted to know.

It is a way to resolve salary disputes between players that are not eligible for free agency and their teams. Each submits a salary figure and presents a case to an arbitrator. The player gets the salary presented by the winner of the case.

yes, there is arbitration in all sports. Its when a team and player disagree in how much they are getting paid, so they take it to arbitration.
