The only "activity" that is available on Alcatraz is the guided tour by the Park Service.

Other than the "normal" tour, you could take a night tour! I highly recommend it because there's nothing like seeing the SF skyline from Alcatraz at night. Another less-known event is the sunrise service held each year on Thanksgiving day. It's a day to remember and celebrate the indigenous cultures of California. It's held on the island because Alcatraz used to be Native American land before the government took it over to build a prison. (In the 70s the Native Americans briefly re-conquered the land)

I am planning a trip there myself, and all the reviews I have read highly recommend taking the evening tour. You get more from the guide and you get a much better view of the city. Again I haven't been there but that is what the reviews say and what I am going to do. Besides the tours there isn't much else to do there.

I've heard of people packing lunches but I've never visited Alcatraz even though I've lived in SF for so many years. I'd suggest that you wear something warm. It can get cold when you go out in the water and also weather in SF seems to turn really cold at sundown, no matter what time of year it is.

People used to do time at Alcatraz...but no more. Seriously, you would need to take a tour...

Well as far as activities, I'm not sure what you want. They have tours with or without headsets, you can buy souvenirs/books in the store. I don't think there are any "activities" on the island. I have lived here all of my life and I don't know of any activities other than what I described above.

They have a self guided tour and that is it. Be prepared to do a lot of walking up stairs as well.
