That is a fairly small environment, so size of reptile is a factor... it depends on your preference. I use a 120 gallon for my 2 beardies. I have a 40 gal which houses my California Desert Iguana (1.2 ft H-T) and Western Collared lizards (2) (8" NC) . If you are going for the desert scene, that tank is too small for Bearded Dragons at mature size. You need 120-200+ gal for beardies to be happy when they are at mature size. If you are going for the tropical environs I would say anoles or tropical geckos for 40 gallon. If desert/dry environment is your thing I would go with anything that doesn't get larger than 12" H-T.

I use a formula for figuring tank size... mature length HT in inches x 6 = gallons for tank size. So for a 12" HT rep you need a 60 gallon tank, and you could probably put 2-3 individuals in there happily.

I have been a reptile keeper/breeder of many varieties for 18 yrs. and this is my formula that always works out.

For instance my 89" green iguana has his own enclosure that is homemade but if it was to be 'gallonized' it would be about 690 gallons. It fits my formula and he is happy in there. I have some smaller lizards in ther ewith him but it doesn't bother him because he is a vegetarian :)

I hope this helps you decide. Think about it as if it was you in there... would you want to be in a tank only 2x's your adult size?

Good luck with your rep keeping. It is rewarding and as a side note I want to tell you to look at North American Collared lizards if you haven't already. I have mine trained like dogs I swear they come when called. (I caught mine wild in the desert SW of the US but you can buy them)

They are very intelligent and friendly reptiles. They even learn to do their business in the same spot if you train them. Very cool lizards that I think don't get enough airtime.

Peace - Out!

Is it a 40 gallon long or tall? I breed bearded dragons and the smallest tank I keep an adult in is a minimum of 75 Gallons tall since they need the basking area up high. If it's a 40 gallon long you can easily house full grown milk and corn snakes (1 to a cage!).

Leopard Geckos are between the least confusing of lizards to maintain given the right situations. They hardly chew and tame actually. Leopard geckos that are dealt with generally, stay incredibly calm. even though, be careful the form you carry the gecko. by no ability via its tail! Geckos tails ruin off quite actually as a protection mechanism. they're going to develop lower back, yet by no ability as superb looking through fact the unique tail. they're incredibly clean animals. the final public will define one component of their tank through fact the "bathing room" and in basic terms use that one section, making it straight forward to scrub. stable success. I even have 2 of them, and that they are the final pets interior the international. (My opinion..) EDIT: Leopard Geckos are actually maintained. An ten gallon aquarium will wisely domicile a single gecko. A 20 gallon tank will domicile one million male with 2 women. by no ability placed 2 men mutually as they're going to combat. additionally a 40 gallon tank will domicile one million male and 3-4 women. playstation ; Google is an straight forward thank you to come across the wonderful care sheets for Leopard geckos.
