As opposed to pants or shorts. Examples: opening doors, etc.

I also have noticed that women in the States are less likely to acknowledge chivalry than in many other countries, though I myself make sure to thank anyone who does such deeds(not a boast, mere comment to asure that not all women take chivalry for granted).

Another thing, I am not saying that this is discrimination.

Not really. I open doors, etc., for all women. I even stand when a woman enters the room. I am also typically more polite, and refrain from vulgar language until I know her well. But I can't say it has anthing to do with her clothing.

No, why should we? Because a skirt or a dress is "more feminine" or something?

And why is it that when I open a door for a girl in Europe or Australia, the girl is always pleasant and acknowledges my chivalry, but when I open a door for a girl in America, the girl walks by me as if I don't exist?

America lacks social grace.

I am a woman but I can tell you that everytime I have worn a dress or a skirt and top, men have treated me more like a lady. Everytime! When I got my divorce and went out with my friends, if they wore jeans and I wore a dress, the men always hit on me, asking me to dance and buying me a drink and treating me like a lady, pulling out my chair for me to sit down, opening doors for me, etc.

For me, wearing a dress always caused guys to treat me with more respect, more chivalrous, etc.

If you haven't tried it, yet. I sure recommend it. Good Luck!

Women have far more power over men's behavior than they realize.

Men are more likely to be chivalrous to women with a modest, feminine bearing. If you want to be treated like a lady, dress and act like one. And there's nothing wrong with pants or shorts, when modest or appropriate.

On the other hand, if all you crave is attention, you can dress and act like a slut, and we'll be more than happy to treat you like that, as well.

I think wearing dresses makes it easier than for someone who wears shorts. Still though (speaking for myself) if I'm going to hold open an door or be chivalrous I try to do it for anyone, regardless of their choice of clothing.

I'd have to say no, I usually hold doors open, etc, for women, but I love to see them in dresses or skirts, I have to admit!

Any guy who is willing to base his chivalry on what you're wearing is probably not worth your time.
