July will see the start of no smoking in public places in England. When this was done in Scotland and Ireland were they threatend with camera wilding government spies ready to slap massive fines on the errant smoker too?

I answered a question the other day on this very subject-apparently the government has got a spare £30million lying around that they're going to use to train up 'secret squirrel' type people to go into public places and catch us out.

I would have more sympathy with this cause if it weren't for the fact that it's blatantly discrimination at work.

Smokers are not allowed to smoke in public, OK I see the arguments(don't agree-personally I see pollution from buses and lorries as a bigger issue, but I digress), however smokers can't start a smokers restaurant or smokers only bar because that's discriminating against non-smokers-WHAT??

This leads me to believe that the real reason that smoking bars/restaurants are not to be allowed is that all the smokers would go there and then T.Blair's spies won't be raking in £'s with the on-the-spot fines that will be 'coming soon' in a public area near you.

Not gutted but not happy either. OK about it going mainly smoke free but think there should be an exception for pubs and clubs as smoking and drinking and going out go together for me. Before you say what about the health rights for pub staff well I work in a pub and most people there smoke. If you take a job in a pub you know what it's going to be like. Even at the moment we as staff can't smoke inside and have to go out to the yard to have a smoke.

I have recently moved to Ireland and experienced the smoking ban first hand. As a smoker I fully support the ban. Resturants and bars are infinitely more pleasant. Word of warning...when you can't smell smoke, you can smell b.o and farts

If smokers behave responsibly and follow the rules they'll have nothing to fear and no-one will waste money and effort monitoring that the rules are being adhered to.

Personally I can't wait to be able to eat in the restaurant of my choice without having to endure the stench of someone else's smoke just because they can't last an hour without lighting up.

If I wouldn't go over and fart next to them while they're eating, why should I have to breathe their stink while I am?

Smoking is the most ignorant habit of them all, if you are walking behind a smoker when they exhale you get a lung full of their smoke. They put their smelly fags out on the street, which makes the place look unsightly. In a pub they leave their fags burning in ash-trays, which normally always drifts in your general direction again polluting your lungs. Smoking should be banned, everywhere, oh on top of that it kills, even those that don't choose to smoke...fact!!

Oahu is like that now and you can't smoke within 20' of any building. Doesn't bother me none, but I still think they need to do something about the "alcohol" thing.

How do sign up to be one of these government spies? Is the job salaried, or commission based?

We've been smoke free here in many places in the states for awhile. It's not as bad as you think.
