I have a brand new 30 gallon saltwater tank and I need to know what all I could fit in it. I was hoping I could have 3 clowns(which is what someone told me they are best in 3's). I also want atleast an arrow crab, and some smaller inverts if possible. Please tell me how I should go about planning all that I can put in this tank. Should I get the clowns or the inverts first? If I dont have enough room for 3, how many do I have room for? Please share your insight. Thanks for your help.

These are better in twos, not threes. They have a weird gender thing going on - the largest and most aggressive in a group will become a functional female. The next largest becomes a functional male. Everyone else is an "it" (technically male, but don't mate). If the functional male dies, the next largest/most aggressive becomes the next "male". If the female dies, the functional male becomes female, and the next most aggressive "it" becomes the functional male. Only problem is, this only works if you have room for a large group. In a 30 gallon, you don't. You could get three, but once two pair up, they'll become territorial and kill a third. And if you get two and one dies, don't put another clownfish in thinking it will be a new "mate" - it will be dead!

You can have the clowns, plus whatever inverts you want with them, and maybe 1-3 other fish, depending on size and just so long as they don't resemble a clown. It/they should look entirely different so it/they don't create a territorial response. I've kept them with cardinalfish, blennies, longnose hawkfish, firefish, and yellow tanks.

2 gallons per inch of fish is what i have always heard. I have 3 tanks all fresh water, and i dont have any problems with over crowding or water quality by following that rule, just keep in mind the potential growth of the fish..

The rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. That should be fine for your clowns.

Get the inverts first as the clowns will be the more dominant fish.

Ahhh maybe enough for 4 lawn chairs. And maybe another gal of brew. Never know Mr. Duggar is a man of mystery.
