Scorsese did not make the film to make you connect with the main character....He did not want to make a true to history film either...Martin Scorsese grew up in the mean streets of New York. He tells his stories from his perspective of what organized crime was, or is....Now, you want to talk about the best mob films ever made...If you want to compare his work to Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) I'd say hands down, Scorsese does it better...The only difference is that The Godfather is almost too glamourized, as where Scorsese wants to show the real life of these guys in their business...They didn't live full lives, they were either killed, throwin in jail or just dissapeared....Scorsese notes that what he wants to do is show the fast rise, and the fall to follow....The Goodfellas is by far one of the best American made films ever.
And why people are so interested in hearing about and watching these stories of real "dirty" people...Because that drive is in all of us, like it or not...The drive to get rich quick, to be above the law, to just be in command and a part of something thats gets you everything you want....And for someone so good like Martin Scorsese to put it on screen the way he does...Who's not going to enjoy it, and want to watch it over and over again....Take another look at this film, and watch Casino, and The Departed, and The Godfather, look at them as films, as someone trying to tell you a story with a message behind it, and not just a movie trying to make you connect with it's characters or sympathize with them.....Watch it again....

i know this is old but i agree with you. i liked a bunch of scorsese movies like taxi driver, casino(even though it was kind of cliche in the way the story is told) etc. but something about goodfellas always rubbed e the wrong way. i cant take ray liotta as a gangster seriously for some reason. also all these mob moies apart from the godfather have the same plot with different details. the rise of up and coming gangsters-them at the peak of tjeir power enjoying money and wealth-few random events that cause a small downward trajectory that the main character doesnt notice at the time-then the spiril downward of everything while some weird fast paced 50s brass instrument song plays while their world comes crashing down around them.end details may vary

not me. It is a masterpiece and one of the best American gangster films of all time. I watched it in a movie theater when it came out in 1990. I loved it so much I had to go back and watch it again two days later. The storytelling is hypnotic and exhilarating. The way the narrative flows is brilliant with the voice over, the period songs and the tastefully slick camera work. The contrast between scenes of charming family life with horrific violence has certainly paved the way for shows like The Sopranos.
I'm not sure why you found it "terrible". That's quite harsh. Perhaps you don't have sophisticated taste when it comes to movies ? Maybe you should rent the 1991 movie "Mobsters" starring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey. Maybe that's more your speed.

I am sorry you don't like Scorsese. Goodfellas ranks up there with the Godfather in mob movies. Goodfellas was historically accurate and followed the book. It also portrayed Henry Hill as a somewhat likeable guy (which he is a rat). If you did not like this movie dont bother watching 2 other great mob movies like Casino and his new one Departed.

I agree with you. I feel the same way about The Sopranos. As for the Godfather, I walked out. Dirty people, dirty lives, too real for me to pay good money for. But for some reason Americans really like films about hoods, crime and violence heavily spiced with profanities. Not too sure why such stuff is considered "art" but there is no accounting for taste, or lack of it. But when the media heavily promotes, people buy into it.
I find it hard to have sympathy or emotion for anything that involves Mafioso characters. These descendants of the Medici have been around for a long time and do 30% of the dirty work for some government agencies and the Illuminati.
I just do not enjoy listening to foul language and violence. No amount of wonderful camera work can get me past that!
Goodfellas... I rented it and took it back within 1 1/3 hours and exchanged it for The Illusionist, a far finer production.

No one. You just are not very smart. I have always loved gangster movies and live a life around criminal activity. I love money, fancy clothes, guns, dope, beating, killing, etc. in movies. Those are the reasons I love it. You can go watch the Bridges of Madison or Fried Green Tomatoes or Moonstruck, or Ghost, or Dirty Dancing you sissy.

If anything, it's underrated. The film is a masterpiece that you obviously have no appreciation of.
