The obedience to talk radio seems so similar to the English rule of the 18th century.

Because the right-wing doesn't care about the history of this nation. In a truly Orwellian sense, it is regularly twisted for their own purposes, though.

I once asked a regressive coworker of mine why he felt that protesting was un-American... he responded that the founding fathers would have been against protest.

I said "What about the Boston tea party?"

...and he said "What's that?"

I realized right then that we just weren't on the same level. We might as well have been talking different languages.

I've met two types of righties... those who are ignorant of American history or those who spin it for their own purposes. There's not much in between.

My goodness, the rhetoric of this question is as exaggerated as I have ever seen!

Rush as a king? Do you really think ANYONE with a highschool education would confuse the two and their actual powers and roles? As much as you may dislike Rush, why use such a nonsensical comparison? It undermines anything you might say against him (the points may be valid, but the comparison makes your reasoning skills seem questionable).

English rule of the 18th century involved monarchs who could rule by simple statement. Their word was law. If they wanted something, they commanded it and armies would move to their bidding. If you didn't, you could be imprison and killed.

Rush has no such powers, just the personality (likeable or not) to convince people.

Argue against his ideas, and since he isn't an elected representative (and therefore a symbol of our democratic rule), feel free to call him names, spread false rumors, or otherwise try to damage his reputation (or just oppose and dissent, both American values),...

...but at least try to use analogies that are partially founded in reality. You might as well say he's like an alien trying to brainwash us, or a lamprey sucking us dry.

It won't mean much, but if it entertains you, fine.

It just doesn't help add to the dialogue much. I'm rather surprised anyone bought into it. Kind of depressing, whether they were pro- or anti-Rush, that they lacked sufficient intelligence to see how silly the comparison is.

Keep speaking up, regardless. Free speech. Rush has it. You have it. So does anyone who would argue with you, OR Rush.

I'm not really seeing the connection. Talk radio hosts are not taxing anyone or posting troops in their homes. There's no obedience involved. All the radio hosts are doing is putting out a message that a lot of people happen to agree with.

In fact, many of our Founding Fathers were much like the talk radio hosts of today. Men like Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison frequently wrote political material for mass public consumption. They strongly advocated certain political views and strongly criticized the views of others. If anything, talk show hosts are following in the footsteps of our Founding Fathers when they excercise their 1st Amendment rights.

Hmm ... You ask such deep questions and get such deep & thought-provoking answers from people of your ilk. We can only deduce that there must be a lot of public school students out of school for Presidents' Day.

Enjoy your day off.

"Think" about this, though, ...
Have you noticed that the left -most people think that freedom of speech only applies to people that agree with them (e.g. Sheehan, Michael Moore, Al Franken)?? Hmm...

By the way, I don't regularly listen to Rush, but I have listened to his show in the past. The threat that he brings to the liberals is another opinion. As I said above, liberals think freedom of speech only applies to them. So a different opinion would obviously be bad/evil/scary. Besides the fact that most people that fear Rush the most have never listened or only heard soundbites of his show.

Of course some actions cannot only be expected from people at a certain level of maturity. Enjoy your day off!

Think about it -- figure it out.

I find it very laughable that the Libs are so threatened by talk show hosts like Rush, Sean.
We listen to Rush and the like because we want/like to. Rush is neither a King or a Lord, nor does he "rule" over us. Only weak minded people like you are threatened by these talk show hosts!

Rush has neither conferred nor received a title. Our nation has always had voices of influence. Rush just happens to have influence with a group in this country, as does Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell.

I listen to Rush all the time. I especially like their early stuff like 2112 and their later stuff has been good too! However, what does Rush have to do with what the Founders wanted?

I think that is because some minds have to be led... they can't manage to make decisions and lead themselves on their own so they seek out these loud voices to tell them how to think.

As far as the question exactly, there will always be a portion of society, especially on the rightside of the aisle, that lacks the ability for independent thinking.

It is called freedom of speech and many on the left can't comprehend that. If the left fears it or opposes it they call it a regime or dictatorship and even accuse the president of being a self appointed ruler. 8th grade civics class and a understanding of the constitution will prove that yet again it is nothing more than petty scare tactics.

People who don't have the intelligence to think for themselves listen to Rush. Anything else would require too much effort. It's much easier being told what to think than to have to figure it out for themselves.
