Being a musician from that era this is a difficult question to answer in some ways...but even though I am a hugh fan of Elvis' work and recognize the fact that no single artist has ever had the impact that he did on the world as a whole, the fact that Buddy Holly wrote all his own songs, (Elvis didn't write any), practically all of them r&r classics, means that while his overall contribution was not as hugh as Presleys' , his is probably more important to the evolution of Rock and Roll. You must also consider that Elvis' career spaned just over 20 years compared to only 3 or 4 years for Holly. Who knows how big Holly would have been had he lived.
