It depends on how you handle pain. None of my cartilage piercings (four including one industrial) hurt but I have a really high pain tolerance. It stung and was hot for a little bit after the whole thing was done. And if it does hurt, the actual pain should only last a minute or two. The piercing itself takes 3 seconds once the needle goes through. Be sure to clean it well and how your piercer tells you to. Don't play with it too much because that will make the healing process take even longer. Be sure to get it done with a NEEDLE. Going to the mall and having the gun used is so bad for your ear. A needle clears out that spot where as the gun literally breaks your cartilage and pushes it aside within your skin. The healing time for any piercing done with a needle is cut in about half if nothing goes wrong. The gun causes more trauma to your skin around and takes longer to heal fully. Get it on the side you don't sleep on so that you can't irritate it, that will help with the healing as well and be careful with your hair brush, products and how much it is exposed to the sun at first. The skin can get dried out in the healing and the sun will make it itchy if it's had too much. If you have any questions about how your ear is healing call your piercer. They are there to answer questions. Don't try and take the ring out for the first month or two and don't try changing it on your own for the first two to three months. My piercer changed the jewelry in one of mine while it was still semi new for me because the hole hadn't healed all the way and she could get the ring through faster and easier. Good luck! I will look great, don't let people telling you that putting extra holes in your body is stupid, it's up to you and after all and a piercing is easy enough to take out if you don't like it!

A cartilage piercingg does hurt more than a lobe piercin and it takes a long time to heal. But like most things it all depends on the person and their tolerance for pain. Also you have to be careful not to get it infected and that a bump doesn't start to show up on the back of your ear where the piercing is, if it does go back and ask the person who did it how you can get rid of it. Some people use a tea bag(normal tea and not hot)to get it to go down. Good luck!

Cartilage piercings typically will hurt more than lobe piercings since the tissue is harder and thicker.
My best advice to you is have it done by a professional body piercer who uses needles, not those awful guns
http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Piercing_gun
Also, be sure that you use good after care and that you are gentle with your piercing (i.e. don't play with it, don't sleep on that side, don't change the jewelry until its been at least 6 months). Keep in mind cartilage takes about 6 months to heal but can take as long as a year in some cases.
The piercer should explain to you what you need to use to take care of your piercing and if you have problems, you should be provided with aftercare sheet and their name and phone number so you can contact them. Keep in mind if you go to Claires or some shady place like that, they puncture you and send you on your way with no help and no follow up which is HORRIBLE!

I've had both my upper cartilage (At the top of my ear), and my tragus (the "flap" covering my ear) pierced...there was a pinch, then some pressure, but after wards, it just ached a little bit, then itched like heck while it healed. The upper cartilage was done with a piercing gun, and the tragus at a piercing parlor, and neither hurt all that much...but again, pain is relative, so you might have a different opinion. Good luck!

No, it doesn't hurt as much as getting your lobe pierced, because there aren't as many nerves in your cartilage. I don't really have any advice to give, besides making sure you clean it at least twice a day with rubbing alcohol to make sure you don't get an infection.

It hurts like heck. You have to keep an earring in it longer than a lobe. The higher up your ear you go the more it hurts. Just keep it very very clean and follow all directions on care.

Frankie F has no idea what he is talking about. I've had mine done more than 3 times and it hasn't hurt once. Personally my lobes hurt SO much more!

Oh hell yeah it hurts more than getting a lobe pierced.
Lobe piercing does not hurt.
Cartilage piercing does.
da-da. simple as that.
Um as far as advice, the good news is that the pain doesn't last long at all.
