yes, watch them open the oil and make sure they use the one that you want.

I would buy a quart of each, pour a little in a clear glass and compare the color and the smell. Then I'd unscrew the filter and see what the oil in there looks like in a glass. It might look a little dirtier but not a lot if you do it soon.

The only way you could really know for sure is to provide the oil and watch them open it and pour it in.

There's a real good chance they do put regular oil in and charge you for synthetic, since it cost 3 times as much. It's like a free steak dinner to them. You're wise to be suspicious.

What would be best is for you to change your own oil. Use a big torque wrench on the pan plug so you have good leverage. I'd suggest about 35 pounds of torque when tightening. Once you get the tools it's not that hard and the tools will be paid for about the third time.

You'd need a pan, torque wrench with socket and an oil filter wrench.

An oil change shop isn't going to normally short change you, but either watch the mechanic...or ask to see the bottles "before" they are opened. If they use "filler hoses", with a handle in them, they are using "bulk" oil out of a large drum. That still can be synthetic, but sometimes not.

synthetic is alot thicker of an oil than regular grade.....if u happen to have a quart of regular oil layin around put some on a finger tip then slide your dipstick out of your engine then put the so called SYNTHETIC on your opposite finger tip. Is there a difference? is the "synthetic" thicker? If all else fails go to auto zone and ask them. they may evn come out to your car to look at the oil
